Changes

Things change. There are times when change happens in a moment.  Other times, it takes a life time.  Always, though, things change.

Things change especially if you live where we live.  Last week the sun shined brightly in the sky.  The warmth of it’s rays reached far enough to point the gauge of the thermometer past the 50 degree mark, inviting us to enjoy its rays.  With hot coffee, of course.

Yes, I’m still “on” coffee, but as my daily mileage ticks up, my consumption goes down.  (I know you were just dying to know that.)

Sidewalk chalk in January? I’ll take a full helping of that.

And how about a side of tennis.

And an extra helping of cuteness. . .

Sun in January calls for just one thing. . . basking in it. . .

It felt like the warmth and the sun would be with us forever. Like winter had dealt us it’s final blow and we had turned the corner into spring.  I seriously had to keep reminding myself that winter had only begun.  Make mental notes that we will be slapped in the face with cold winds and the suns glow will be traded for gray skies and snowflakes racing toward the ground.

Yep, winter isn’t over.  Just this weekend the scene changed dramatically.

Kids adorned in layers of clothes, multiple pairs of socks, and hats and gloves raced down the hill in our backyard. I’d like to say that I enjoyed this scene as much as I enjoyed the other, but I can’t.  I ventured outside just long enough to be run over by a sled or two and to capture a few pictures.

The kids love the white stuff and I enjoy watching them love it.

Winter brings the challenge of filling our time indoors.  Sometimes, my creativity is working at it’s maximum and my mind goes full boar with craft projects, creative ideas, and time fillers that will be memorable.  In fact, just last week the kids asked if we could make a Growing Machine again.  Oh boy.  I don’t think so.  Having an infant certainly changes the way my mind, energy level, and creativity flow.  These days when they aren’t braving the snow, we can usually be found huddled around a game trying to make it to the finish line before Meadow wakes up or needs to eat, be held, rocked, etc.

BLOKUS is a very fun game. I would recommend it to those with kids in the 4-plus range

Creative craft projects are few and far between as I continue to adjust to balancing life with three.  Instead, we settle for bathtub swimming.

Bathing suits in January are quite a treat.

And if two in a tub is awesome then three must make the best day ever, as I heard Chanelle say as I brought Meadow into the bathroom.

We found the best trick to calm our Miss Meadow down when she is fussy.  Bathtub girl she is. . .

Bathtub swimming.  Yep, that’s the extent of my creative flow these days.  I may be lacking in the creative area, but I did spend one morning as The Best Mom Ever.  My trick?

I served jelly beans for breakfast.  You don’t believe me?

I did.  Really.

For years we have been reading this book, given to us by our neighbor, and Charlie and Chanelle always ask if they can have jelly beans for breakfast.  Of course, being a responsible mother, I always say no.  Until, this weekend, that is.  When I called them to breakfast they couldn’t believe their eyes. . .

I really was the best Mom ever, according to my two oldest, for about 2 minutes until I took the bowls away after only letting them eat a few.  BUT, they are still talking about it.

It’s all about the memory, right?

Things change.  Season’s change.  The weather changes.  My creative energy changes.  Everything changes.

And that’s what I’ve been thinking about.  I suspect if I would spend time reading this blog from one day to another I might be concerned about the writers mental stability.  One day she’s silly and sarcastic the next day contemplative and reflective. One day happy as can be and the next worried about everything and nothing.  I’m sure there is a diagnosis there somewhere.

Is this normal or am I the only one?

I guess I just want this space to represent real life.  At least my real life. . . however crazy it might appear.  Some days are better than others.  Some days are bright and sunshiny while others are cold and gloomy.  Some days I’ve got it all together and could give Martha Stewart a run for her money and the next I’m burning cookies in the oven and dropping a vacuum cleaner down the stairs.

And that’s just it.  Just like we ride the weather, I’m learning to ride the ebbs and flows of life with the understanding that so few things are permanent.

So. few. things.

And deep down. . . I’m okay with that.

O Summer I can so agree with you. Funny Change has been on my mind a lot to lately. My oldest is home, graduated from college, doing the waiting game with several job opportunities on the plate and waiting. I know God is in control but I know what I want for him. Brett was home and played special music at church and played and sang. He is maturing and growing so fast in college, wasn't it just yesterday when I could put them in the tub for fun time? Hearing a stranger say about all the good things about your oldest which was what you wanted. Yes, change comes whether our hearts are ready or not. I look at meadow and say to Shawn can we adopt a little girl? Yes, I did, even with my health issues. I started a new job at 46. What will the future bring, good, bad. So glad Gid is in control. You are a wonderful mom to come up with all these ideas! Give them all hugs and kisses for me. I will prob be calling soon:)ReplyCancel

This weather is wacky, right? Love all the snow photos. We didn't get a chance to enjoy the dusting we got…it was way too windy.

    V loves the bath too. It's amazing.ReplyCancel
