Running Chatter: Christmas Edition

Currently, this is the make-up of our home. . .

Meadow:  Pink-Eye, Cold
Charlie:  Ear Infection, Cold
Chanelle:  Cold
Summer:  Cold and Fever
Chad:  Cold

Merry Christmas to us, right?  I don’t doubt that this is the makeup of many, many homes right now.  Despite the sickness that has invaded our home I couldn’t help it. . . I had to pop in for a quick post. . .

My current Running Chatter. . .

1.  Hot Glue Gun LoveI am developing a deep love for the hot glue gun.  Where has this ingenious tool been all of my life?  I recently discovered the gun in our cupboard and after a slightly finicky start (in which 3 or so of my fingers were burned) I got the hang of it.  Now, I’m no Martha Stewart but we are finding this little doodad to be quite fun.

Now that the temperatures are colder we are doing our best to fill our indoor time.  Enter cardboard, popcorn, and yes, hot glue gun.

Seriously, one dot of hot glue and those little kernels adhered themselves to the cardbaord with the strength of a nail.

Voila!

We’ve got ourselves a popcorn wreath.

(Like I said, Martha Stewart, I am not. . . but that hot glue gun has my heart.)

2.  Meadow vs. Ornaments I get how tempting it must be.  Those bright twinkling lights and shiny ornaments. . . they are almost impossible to resist.  Right?

First she stares them down. . .

Then she looks at me with that “but-look-at-me-I’m-so-cute” look. . . she dares me to tell her no.

I do my best to hide my smile while putting on my “Stern mother look” and caution my 1-year old. . . No, Meadow. . . “

She doesn’t hear me.  She grabs, tugs, and wiggles the ornament down each time.  We play this game every single day. . . multiple times.

Meadow wins every time.

3.  We BakedWe’ve done very little baking since our house has been on the market.  The thought of having a mess in the kitchen and having to clean it up for a showing is just more than I can take at the moment.  Therefore, we’ve played more games, colored more, and read more books in an attempt to fill our time outside of the kitchen.  However, last week I couldn’t take it anymore.

I figured baking one thing wouldn’t hurt, right?

Except somehow one thing turned to two turned to three and on and on. . .

Pumpkin rolls, peppermint bark, Buckeyes, Chocolate covered pretzels, Chocolate covered marshmallows, Chocolate covered anything we could find. . . The girls and I spent the afternoon in the kitchen and it was just what we needed. . .

By the time we finished, my kitchen looked like a high volume bakery threw up.  Flour was everywhere from the counter tops to the floor.  Chocolate had hardened on the kitchen table and somehow powdered sugar made it’s way into the living room.  There went my plan to keep the kitchen clean.

But you know what?  It was worth it.  We made memories.

4.  The Best Part of Christmas. . .

. . . is the family in our community who transforms their house into the most wonderful Christmas Wonderland. . .

We anticipate our visit to this most incredible display each Christmas.  Truly, you have to see it to believe it.  No words needed. . .

From beginning to end your eyes are met with beautifully, creative displays of a world that is so simple, beautiful, and filled with the magic of Christmas. . .

There is nothing like the look in their eyes and the excitement in their voices as they discover and rediscover every single year the fascinating display before them. . .

Best of all?

That look of wonder that is impossible to hide from their faces.

5.  SnowWe had our first snow of the year.  Charlie and Chanelle danced around the house and raced for the coats, hats and boots with unbridled enthusiasm.  We probably had less than 1/4 inch of snow, but Charlie insisted. . . we’re going to build a snowman. . .

Meadow enjoyed the scene from the inside. . .

It was quite cold out and in the end, they gave up on the snowman in about 10 minutes. . .

Hmmm. . . I wonder why we’re all sick?

6.  SnowflakesSpeaking of snowflakes. . .

Charlie, Chanelle and I joined others from all around in making snow flakes for Sandy Hook school in Connecticut.  I knew we had to participate after reading this. . .

When school resumes for the children of Sand Hook Elementary, it will be in a new building.  PTA parents are woking to welcome students back to a winter wonderland of beautiful, unique paper snowflakes.  Please join us by sending your snowflakes to:
Connecticut PTSA

60 Connolly Parkway
Building 12, Suite 103
Hamden, CT 06514

Such a simple and easy act, but it feels so good to do something.  Care to join?

7.  Olivia Act. . .
Speaking of doing something, I want to tell you about the Olivia Act. . .

I am so honored to join several thousand photographers who are taking part in this act   The Olivia Act, inspired by one of the
children killed in Newtown, CT, was started by a photographer who wishes
to be anonymous. Olivia’s family had family pictures taken a short time
before she was killed. Those pictures
are precious and now priceless to them. Upon hearing this, this
photographer was moved to give away family photo shoot and has
challenged other photographers to do the same. We go about our daily
lives and sometimes we don’t take the time or have the resources to have
family photos taken.

I will be taking nominations for a family
who you think would appreciate this gift. This session will take place
at a later date. I will be taking nominations until January 15th.
Please email summer@summerkphotography.com the following
information about the family whom you would like to nominate:

Name
Contact information
Brief summary about why you selected this family.

Please put “THE OLIVIA ACT NOMINATION” in the subject line.
The chosen family will be contacted via email. Please do not post their
information here. The gift is a session and a collection of digital
portraits, so they may have priceless keepsakes to adorn their home.

Like so many of us, after this tragedy I felt such a desire to “do” something.  When I saw this act, I couldn’t not participate.  Please consider nominating someone for this and help me spread some love and hope in a world that is searching for it. . .

8.  Walking
And last, but not least. . . Meadow has decided that the Christmas season is the right time for her to begin walking. . .

And being the good parents we are. . . we gave her a cat tail while she practices. . .

I’m sure she’ll love these pictures when she’s 16.

*****************************************************

That’s all for now.  Wishing each of you a very Merry Christmas Eve!

Chatter, Out.
